Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ

What are LAMDA exams?
LAMDA stands for London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. A LAMDA exam is the speech and drama equivalent of a music grade, which begin at introductory levels and culminates at Grade 8. The exams use performance to develop self confidence, physical presence and a strong speaking voice.
How do classes run at LAMDA House?
The majority of learners will participate in a lesson once a week, where we will assist them in preparing for their exams while boosting their sense of
self-assurance. We promote individualised learning, allowing students to progress at their own speed without any pressure to take exams by a set deadline. Our goal is for learners to have a positive experience as they learn new material and develop their abilities in performance, communication, and self-confidence.
My learner has already done some exams in LAMDA can they continue with you?
If your child has previously completed a LAMDA exam and is interested in advancing to the next level, we will evaluate their readiness for the higher grade. Alternatively, if they prefer to explore a different exam format, that is also an option.
How long would you say is best to prepare for an exam?
Learners taking exams are not constrained by time limits. Removing the stress of exams scheduled for specific dates allows students to gain valuable skills like confidence and self-assurance. We can work at any pace that works best for your learner.
What’s the difference between performance exams and communications exams?
Performance exams focus on the Acting and Musical Theatre syllabus. Elements of expression, physicality, character, vocal projection, confidence and focus are all assessed in performance exams. Communication exams focus on the Speaking Verse and Prose, Reading for Performance and Speaking in Public examinations. Elements of diction, memory recall, articulation, posture, vocal expression, understanding and engagement are all assessed in communication exams.
Do you have background checks?
Both Cathy and Mark have Enhanced DBS Certificates (the highest level of background check required for teaching children in the UK) and we adhere to LAMDA's safeguarding policy and procedure. Mark is Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ArtsEd Sixth Form and holds up to date Level 3 safeguarding training and Keeping Children Safe in Education certificates.
Do LAMDA exams gain UCAS points?
Level Three qualifications (Grades 6 and above) are included in the UCAS Tariff. This means that if you pass those exams, you can claim points to help you with University entry in the UK.
When do your classes run?
One to one tuition takes place on a Saturday and we also have flexibility for tuition on selective nights throughout the week.
Can you use LAMDA exams to complete Duke of Edinburgh?
You can use your LAMDA lessons and exam preparation time for the skills section of your Duke of Edinburgh award? You can even set yourself the goal of passing the exam at the end of it. Check with your DofE Leader before you start to ensure it meets the requirements for your chosen level.
